By the time he was one, he had conquered the Korean script and assimilated over 1,000 Chinese symbols. By his third birthday, he tackled calculus. Moreover, he astonishingly authored – with parental aid – a compilation of essays, artwork, and calligraphy in English and German spanning 247 pages!
From the instant of his birth, Kim Ung-Yong’s cognitive explosion was palpable. His prodigious skills garnered global accolades swiftly. Before turning six, he was fluent in five languages: Korean, Japanese, English, German, and French. His academic prowess even led him to a physics lecture at Hanyang University.
There was no doubt: Kim’s unparalleled talents were destined to shape his future and, possibly, the trajectory of mankind. His precociousness didn’t go unnoticed. By four, Kim awed experts by achieving an unprecedented 210 on an IQ evaluation tailored for seven-year-olds.
This remarkable accomplishment crowned him with the highest IQ title by the Guinness Book of World Records, though Marilyn vos Savant would subsequently surpass him.
His celebrity soared further when, at five, he showcased his mathematical genius on Japan’s Fuji TV, leaving viewers spellbound as he effortlessly tackled intricate calculus equations.
Soon, one of the globe’s most esteemed establishments took notice of Kim. His awe-inspiring intellect secured him a position at the prestigious NASA when he was merely eight.
A chance so extraordinary for one so young, Kim embraced the challenge. For nearly a decade at NASA, he consistently astounded peers with his impeccable memory and prowess in intricate math.
But life at NASA had its challenges. He experienced solitude, lacking youthful companionship. His adult colleagues, engrossed in their tasks, had little time for camaraderie.
Despite his youth, Kim contributed significantly to NASA. Yet, he felt disenchanted. He believed his research was misused and his innovations overshadowed by his superiors.
Yearning for appreciation and camaraderie, Kim headed back to South Korea in 1978. He pursued formal education, securing his high school diploma in a mere two years and later joining a local university for civil engineering.
To many, Kim’s decision to leave NASA seemed wasteful of his immense gifts. This move, amidst his prior accolades, became a recurring point of contention throughout his life.
After earning his doctorate, Kim Ung-Yong took up a modest role as a middle manager at a Korean firm called Chungbuk Development. Some labeled the once-celebrated wunderkind a “lost genius” for not exploiting his astounding intellect.
Yet, throughout, Kim maintained a positive and satisfied disposition. By 2007, he served as a part-time instructor at Chungbuk National University.
In 2014, he realized a lifelong ambition: securing a professorship. Leaving Chungbuk Development behind, he embraced a role as an associate professor at Shinhan University at the age of 51.
Upon embarking on this journey, Kim expressed his exuberance to the press, proclaiming, “My focus now is to inspire and nurture the upcoming generation.
