Compassionate Crafter Makes Look-Alike Dolls for Children With Physical Differences

“Representation matters” is a common saying. If you need proof, just look at the joy and smiles of children who receive Amy Jandrisevits’ handmade dolls. Former social worker, Jandrisevits is a skilled craftsman who makes dolls that look like those with visible physical differences.

Jandrisevits came up with the idea of these beloved toys after seeing the lack of variety and diversity in the available physical expressions. She has been making dolls for four years, which she considers an inspired work of art.

Jandrisevits dolls can be customized to suit the needs of the recipients. After receiving a doll request, she pays careful attention to the details that are presented in the source photographs–ethnicity, medical issues, physical characteristics–as well as any other distinctive features of her future recipients. Jandrisevits then begins doll construction at her round wooden dining table.

One figure can take as long as seven hours to create. She uses this time to think about how she will illustrate it.

Jandrisevits sees the meticulous work as a reflection of the recipients.

Jandrisevits has created more than 300 of these beautiful, heartfelt creations. Jandrisevits is committed to demonstrating actions that affirm her convictions and spreading messages of equity through her work.

Although she is taken aback at the dolls’ popularity and success, she is not surprised at the feeling of empowerment and inspiration each doll brings.

Amy Jandrisevits, a dollmaker, creates amazing replicas of children who have physical disabilities at her dining room table.
