Sandblaster Buying Guide
The sandblaster will allow you to break down as much of the layer as you need. And on top of that, this will happen not only with extreme ease but also really quickly. You just have to know exactly what you are looking for.
On the market right now you will find all sorts of diverse models, incomparably different from each other. The variety of suggestions is certainly great, but it can also be terribly confusing.
What are sandblasters?
Regardless of the characteristics of the individual models, all sandblasters work on the same principle.
They all use sand or other similar abrasive material to clean various surfaces. It is usually about cleaning various metals from rust, but also about removing old paint or dirt from walls, floors, ceilings, and more.
For this purpose, the sand (or alternative abrasive material) is fired by means of compressed air through a gun with high speed and intensity.
Thanks to this powerful jet directed to the specific surface, the problem layer of the treated object is removed.
Absolutely all components of the sandblast through which the abrasive passes are safe. In most cases, they are either covered with a special protective layer or made of ceramic. The purpose is to prevent erosion of the tool.
In most cases, the abrasive is stored in a special tank, box, or similar. The device itself has an air tank from which the air itself is pumped. Subsequently, the abrasive passes through a hose and exits through the nozzle in a well-organized jet.
What distinguishes the different types of sandblasters, in general, comes down to the way the sand is pushed through the gun.
Either way, almost all sandblasters will do the job they were designed to do. The difference stems from the fact that some will do their job better than others.
These remain serious and specialized machines that find their applications in many different situations. However, especially if you are engaged in painting, in most cases you just can not do without such a device.
What to consider when buying a sandblaster?
Now that you know what sandblasters are, we are convinced that you realize how stable tools they are. Most of them will do a decent job for you anyway.
However, as we mentioned earlier, some sandblasters will just do their job better than others. If you want to choose the perfect tool for you, know that there are a bunch of other things you need to pay attention to.
In this section, we will introduce you to the key characteristics and main features of sandblasters. Take them into account and in any case, you will choose the best possible product for yourself.
Type of sandblaster
As you already know, the peculiarities of different types of sandblasters are based mainly on the way the abrasive is removed from the tool. According to this, they are divided into three main types: gravity sandblasting, pressure sandblasting, and siphon sandblasting.
Gravity sandblasting has three main components. They consist of a hand-held pressure gun with a hose, a container in which the abrasive is stored, and a pressurized air tank.
The container is located above the compressed air tank and contains silicon sand. When you press the trigger, compressed air flows through the gun, which does not stop until the lever is removed.
At the same time, the area at the top of the gun that is connected to the container opens. The air combines with the gravitational force to pull the sand down and then out through the barrel of the tool.
On the other hand, the pressurized sandblaster consists of a larger container that is filled with silicon sand and pressurized at the same time. This type of device in general quite seriously resembles an aerosol can.
A special hose is connected to the top of the container and thus the connection between the container and the gun is made. When you pull the trigger, sand and compressed air come out together. Keep in mind that this procedure often requires both hands.
This process is cleaner and requires less maintenance. However, its disadvantages are related to the fact that the aerosol cans are completely closed. Therefore, once used, the sand cannot be reused. The additional purchase of a new aerosol can is required, which makes the procedure more expensive.
The cheapest and preferred option for most craftsmen is to use a siphon sandblasting machine. It works with the help of a separate air compressor or a normal pressure tank and a different container for storing sand.
The pistol has two separate hoses and when you press the trigger, it sucks the sand from the container in question.
Air pressure
Air pressure rating is definitely one of the key features to look for when looking at the various sandblasters on the market. Keep in mind that in any case, you will need a certain minimum air pressure to use the machine.
In most cases, the air pressure estimate in question is defined either as 90 PSI or as something in the range between 60 PSI and 120 PSI. (PSI stands for pounds per square inch and refers to the weight of air applied per square inch of surface.)
Keep in mind that depending on the rating of your sandblaster, you must also select the appropriate compressor or aerosol can.
If the air pressure of your sandblaster is rated at 120 PSI, for example, your compressor must be able to provide this minimum pressure. Otherwise, the machine simply cannot work properly.
However, you should also keep in mind that the higher the air pressure of your sandblaster, the better. And you realize that more air pressure means higher productivity and ultimately more work done.
In any case, you must choose carefully and prudently. Decide what power you need and pay attention to those products that meet your needs.
Either way, keep in mind that a few extra options are never superfluous.
Airflow
As with the air pressure assessment situation, you should find information about the airflow that it can provide in the description of each product.
Airflow readings in sandblasters refer to the amount of air they use in their work. And you guessed it, the larger models will need more air to work properly than the smaller ones.
Airflow is usually measured in liters (or other volume units as cubic meters) per minute. It comes down to the amount of air that is used in the work process per unit time.
Naturally, more airflow means more air is needed. This is largely decisive for the characteristics of the compressor that you will need to use such a machine.
Some weaker sandblasters have an airflow of about 200 liters per minute. However, in more powerful models, this feature can reach over 300 liters per minute.
In any case, pay enough attention to the airflow of a model before acquiring it. Keep in mind, however, that the airflow of your steam jet will be determined by its features anyway.
Carefully consider your needs and choose wisely. So you will surely be satisfied.
Size
We will certainly not surprise you if we tell you how wide the range of sandblasters of different sizes is. These machines can range from compact handgun to massive multi-liter container that is difficult to move.
Apart from the fact that they are essentially the same type of device, the different models may have almost nothing in common with each other. That’s why it’s important to know exactly what you need.
For some more specialized tasks, you can’t handle a hand-held machine.
Imagine, for example, that you have to process a really large metal surface, for example, and it is seriously layered with rust. In this case, it would probably be easier for you to get a more powerful sandblaster.
It will provide you with enough pressure, as well as enough abrasive so that you can finish your tasks as quickly as possible.
In any case, most craftsmen prefer to use the most compact models possible.
Yes, they need to be filled with abrasive relatively often. In addition, they are far from meeting the power capabilities of their massive competitors. At the same time, however, they are extremely convenient to use and do not exhaust their users.
Compact models are also recommended for their portability. It is definitely convenient for your sandblaster to be easy to transport and use in a variety of conditions.
In addition, small sandblasters are usually so desirable simply because they are extremely practical. For most consumers, they are the ideal choice.
When you use them, your hands do not get tired. This means that you can easily use them for long periods of time. And in the end, we must not forget that this means easier work.
However, each situation has its own specifics and the right choice can vary. Carefully consider exactly what you need before making your final decision.
Warranty
Like many other products, of course, sandblasters come with a guarantee from the manufacturer for the durability of their full work.
On the one hand, it can tell you a lot about the overall condition of a model. On the other hand, it gives you peace of mind that your new acquisition will serve you guaranteed to be true for a certain period of time.
Keep in mind that the durability of different sandblasters, of course, depends on how you use them. The fact that a manufacturer gives a two-year warranty on its product, for example, does not mean that it will work fully for exactly two years.
Care and careful use of these devices guarantee a significantly longer life. They usually even outlive their warranty period.
However, improper use of sandblasters will damage them extremely quickly. If you do not take care of your tool, you will not only damage it, but you may not be able to replace it.
Of course, it is good to look for those products whose manufacturers offer you the longest guarantee of their full operation. However, whatever you do with your new acquisition, do it as people do. Only in this way you can guarantee its survival and full work.
Quality and price
In many respects, the long warranty of a product could serve as a confirmation of its quality. However, we could judge the quality of the sandblasters by their price.
Usually, a higher price means more effort, more careful workmanship, better-selected materials, etc. That is why you could trust it and use it as a guarantee of the quality of a sandblaster.
Of course, it is best to focus on those models that offer you the best possible quality. As it turned out, in most cases this means focusing on more expensive models.
Unfortunately, we do not all have the same opportunities. If you want to save some money when buying a sandblaster, we recommend that you think carefully about what to save.
When you know exactly what you need, you will in any case know what you can do without. You already know the sandblasters well enough, so you will certainly judge adequately.
Think about which of the features of these tools really hold and which do not deserve your attention. However, do not allow yourself to compromise on the quality of a model.
Low-quality purchases, although cheap, often prove to be a worse investment. The financial inconvenience caused by its damage, combined with the potential annoyances of a job poorly done, simply makes it a bad deal.
Choose carefully! Be considerate in advance and you will certainly not regret it later.
How to use your sandblaster as best as possible?
Well, you already know everything you need for sandblasting and now we are confident that you will certainly make the best possible choice. However, buying such a tool is only the first step towards a job well done.
The use of sandblasting, of course, has its own peculiarities. These machines are quite powerful and can be especially dangerous when they fall into the hands of ignorant users.
And safety always comes first! That is why in this section we have prepared some basic tips and guidelines on how to use your new acquisition in the best and safest way possible.
Protect the environment
Before you go to work, it is simply mandatory to secure the area. To do this, first, you must remove all objects that may cause stumbling or falling. Otherwise, you risk the powerful abrasive jet getting out of control.
Make sure the people around you are safe too. No one should eat, drink liquids, or smoke too close to the sandblasting area. Fine abrasive particles can create serious respiratory and other health problems.
It is important to ensure a properly functioning work area. To do this, make sure that all ventilation and air compressors, as well as power supplies and washing stations, are fully functional.
Take care of your equipment
Earlier we drew your attention to how important it is to take care of the condition of your sandblaster. We will now try to be a little more specific in our recommendations.
Check all components of your equipment for cracks and make sure there are none. It is also important to pay attention to your hose to make sure there are no leaks or cracks.
We also recommend that you use minimally toxic abrasive materials. Of course, no abrasive material is completely harmless. However, you can take care of your safety by using a less toxic abrasive whenever possible.
In any case, it is good to store your equipment in a specialized and safe place. Work areas should also be carefully insulated when not in use.
It is also advisable to test breathing filters and carbon dioxide monitors. The work area must be well ventilated, if indoors, in order to reduce the harmful effects of abrasive activity to a minimum.
Get proper safety equipment
So to speak, the “full combat gear” of a person using a sandblaster includes (outside of his sandblasting, of course) several basic components. These are protective helmets and clothing, gloves, safety shoes, earplugs, goggles, and more.
Respiratory equipment is also one of the mandatory elements of all the equipment needed for safe sandblasting. You need to get the right mask to protect your airways from the harmful effects of abrasives.
When cleaning, use suitable means
When you finish your tasks, it is simply a must to clean for yourself.
It would be best to clean your work area with water. In general, anything that includes water-based cleaning methods is welcome.
Your other option is to use a vacuum cleaner, which, however, must be equipped with a specialized HEPA filter.
It is not recommended to use cleaning methods that include compressed air. The only thing you will achieve with its help is to scatter the fine dust particles everywhere in and around your work area.
Trust us, sandblasting experiments are far from a good idea. If you follow the guidelines we have just shared with you, you will certainly work in a safe environment.
