It’s common for people to use an HVLP paint sprayer because it sprays a lot of paint at a reduced pressure, which reduces the number of waste products. The low-pressure output of this paint sprayer also makes it preferable for jobs that require fine details, where a paintbrush would do a bad job. It’s worth noting, however, that utilizing an HVLP sprayer, which produces less overspray and waste, takes longer than an airless sprayer for a job that requires complete coverage.

If you desire to reduce waste, the HomeRight Finish Max is a flexible high-volume low-pressure spray gun that has been used successfully on a variety of home and furniture projects with excellent results.

It has a brass spray tip that doesn’t get rusty or wear out. You have the liberty to adjust the nuzzle to either the horizontal, vertical, or circular spray pattern to apply paint and other coatings. The spray cannon has an easy-to-use control for changing the substance flow rate.

It’s easy to operate, even for those who have never painted with a spray gun before, yet the quality of the finished work will satisfy even the most seasoned and dedicated do-it-yourselfers. The suggested yearly consumption is 50 gallons of paint.

Pros
  • Great for jobs that require a lot of fine-tuning
  • It cuts down on overspray and waste
  • Corrosion and wear-resistant spray tip
  • Simple to operate
Cons
  • Time-consuming
  • Only suitable for small-scale projects

Paint Spray Guns Buying Guide

We have prepared this guide to introduce you to everything you need to know about paint spray guns. When you go through it, you will be surprised by how easy it is to choose the right tool for you.

What are paint spray guns?

The paint spray guns you will come across during your search will certainly differ in their features.

However, regardless of the way how different types work, one thing unites them.

The common goal of all paint guns is to achieve smooth and elegant results by spreading the paint evenly.

All devices have a tank in which the paint used for the specific painting is collected. In addition, they all spray the paint through a specialized vial so as to cover a specific object with it.

It is the ways in which the paint is taken out of the device that lead to the differences between the different types of paint guns.

Either way, these tools allow you to quickly cover a specific surface with paint or other protective coatings such as varnish or ink.

Some people believe that paint spray guns are only intended for painting wooden objects. However, the truth is that these devices can be used to paint almost anything, including metal, brick, masonry, and more.

Thanks to the variety of options that paint spray guns offer, they are a great choice for anyone who is interested in painting.

You will hardly find a tool that works better than such a device.

What types of paint spray guns are there?

As we have already specified, different types of paint spray guns use different operating methods. All types can bring you effective results, but some do better in certain situations than others.

Each paint spray gun has its own characteristics. Different devices definitely have specific advantages, but they always go hand in hand with a number of disadvantages.

In this section, we will introduce you in more detail to the main differences between the different types of paint spray guns. Knowing them, you will certainly be able to quickly find out which device is right for you and which is not.

Airless paint spray guns

Airless paint spray guns pump the paint out of their tank at very high pressure. In this way, they spray paint droplets through their vial to cover the painted surface evenly.

These devices are especially good for painting exterior objects such as fences, grilles, porches, etc., but they do especially well with interior painting of all kinds of walls and ceilings.

Airless paint spray guns do better at spraying thicker paint than their competitors. There is a hydraulic pump inside the device. It increases the pressure either through electricity or through some kind of fuel.

Because these types of paint spray guns are airless, they do not lose energy to drive the air. All the energy can go to driving the paint out of the device and thus ensure higher efficiency.

Such models are famous for the highest outlet pressure among all paint guns. However, you have to be especially careful when using them because of their huge power. In addition, their power can sometimes lead to some losses when spraying paint.

These paint spray guns are ideal for more massive projects but definitely require user attention. Special work is required before an operation, as well as regular care of the device.

Pneumatic paint spray guns

Pneumatic paint spray guns work with the help of compressed air to apply paint to a specific surface. The results that such models provide are usually reduced to a smooth and even coverage of the painted objects.

These devices are usually particularly suitable for painting various furniture such as cabinets, chests of drawers, and the like.

Either way, however, pneumatic paint spray guns usually lead to a little more chaos. They emit more paint than other models and spread it everywhere.

This, of course, leads to high paint expenses. On the other hand, the prices of pneumatic devices are usually the lowest compared to the alternatives.

Pneumatic paint spray guns require a separate air compressor to be used as intended. However, if you already have a suitable air compressor, all you need to get a grip on the paint will be a good hose and gun, and paint, of course.

Keep in mind that the necessary compressor can make these devices relatively difficult to carry. However, if you intend to use the spray gun only at your home, you have nothing to worry about.

Pneumatic models are famous for the finest coating and balanced control among all paint guns. Although they are a bit noisier than the others, these devices remain a great choice that offers you really wide possibilities.

HVLP paint spray guns

HVLP stands for “high volume low pressure”. These models use a large volume of air to move the paint into the nozzle, and low-pressure airflow to produce a uniform mist of paint.

Such paint spray guns are ideal for more complex activities that require a very delicate application of paint.

This is what makes them most suitable for interior use. These devices are a great choice for painting cabinets, cladding, cornices, doors, and the like.

HVLP paint spray guns carry tiny droplets of paint with a large volume of air that they slowly pump. The slow movement of the paint itself leads to the adhesion of a larger number of drops on the painted object. The result is a fine and smooth finish.

Although they use significantly less paint to achieve their results, such models remain relatively affordable. Also, unless you are investing in a more specialized device, you should not use them with too thick paint.

HVLP paint spray guns are available in manual versions as well as with an optional external device. They are extremely light, and they are really easy to work with, which makes them one of the best choices for all beginner painters.

Most devices offer you the ability to adjust the power. In addition, the lower pressure makes these paint spray guns one of the safest tools in the field.

What to consider when choosing a paint spray gun?

We are now confident that you are familiar with the features of the main types of paint spray guns. Once you know the varieties of these devices well enough, you have certainly turned to one or another model.

Keep in mind, however, that your choice should not be limited to the type of paint spray gun. These devices have many more features that are worth paying close attention to.

Only when you know them really well you will be able to choose the right paint spray gun for you.

Power and pressure

On the market, you will find a wide variety of paint spray guns with different power. All of these can provide you with similar or different results in the process of work.

Usually, however, the more powerful a paint spray gun is, the more pressure it can provide. Higher pressure in turn leads to faster spraying of more paint with greater force.

Keep in mind that if you work with relatively thick paint, you can not avoid the high power and pressure models. Otherwise, the device simply will not cope with the effective application of paint.

The most determining factor that should guide you is the specifics of the object you intend to paint.

The more voluminous the work, the more you need a powerful paint gun. If you do not have capable enough tools, painting the yard fence, for example, can be quite annoying and unpleasant work. So annoying that you may end up wondering why you even got a paint spray gun.

However, working on smaller objects has exactly the opposite requirements for the tool you use to perform it. Less powerful paint spray guns will handle the fine work of repainting cabinets in your home, for example, many times more effectively.

Think carefully about what you intend to use your future tool for.

Capacity

The situation with the capacity of your future paint spray gun is broadly similar to that of its power. The volume of your device should be tailored, first of all, to what you intend to use it for.

When reviewing the various products, be sure to keep in mind the scale of the objects you intend to process predominantly.

If you plan to be just an amateur or occasionally provide a little freshness to the furniture in your home, it will probably be better if you focus on a paint spray gun with a more moderate capacity.

However, professionals are likely to need devices with a larger volume. They, usually, have to paint larger surfaces.

You don’t want to have to refill the tank of your paint spray gun in the middle of a working process.

On the other hand, the capacity of a paint spray gun can often determine how durable a particular device is. It doesn’t matter if the product is rated for periodic do-it-yourself workmanship or for daily use by professionals.

In the description of many of the products, you can find information about the weekly, monthly or annual performance of a paint spray gun.

Some of the best devices can handle nearly 400 liters per week. It is advisable for professionals to pay attention to such models.

Cable and hose

Battery-powered paint spray guns are rare. In addition, in most cases, however, the batteries are not very durable and therefore make such devices undesirable.

In any case, most of the products you will come across during your search will work with the help of a cable.

Note that the length of the cable and hose of a paint spray gun is key to the operability of the device. Too short a length can seriously limit the working range of an instrument and thus seriously hamper its users.

The longer your hose and cable, the better. This will allow you to work far enough without having to consider the power source.

In the case of externally powered airless devices, in particular, a longer cable means less need to move the power supply.

Keep in mind, however, that a cable or hose that is too long can also be a potential obstacle. There is a certain risk of the cable getting in the way of the paint. You may also stumble on the cable or hose if you are not careful enough while working.

To make your search process as efficient as possible, we have some tips for you. When inspecting different products, do not pay attention only to the length of the cable and the hose.

It is a good idea to check the maximum length of the hose that the particular spray gun is compatible with.

In many cases, too short a hose on a great device might be just a small obstacle that can be easily removed. If you are resourceful enough, you will certainly make the best possible choice.

Tip

A paint spray gun can be equipped with many different tips. Using the right tip is essential to achieving the desired results.

The type of tip you need will depend on the surface you want to paint and the paint you want to use.

The nozzle is the place where the magic spray of paint takes place. It determines the width and intensity of the spray, as well as the level of spraying.

However, there are exceptions in all situations. Powerful airless paint spray guns, for example, can handle the scattering of extremely dense paint through remarkably small tips.

The sizes of the different tips are usually identified by different numbers. 517, for example, is the most commonly used nozzle in airless devices.

“5” stands for the radius of the nozzle in inches. The following numbers (in this case – “17”) indicate the diameter of the tip in thousands of inches (in this case – 0.017 inches).

For larger projects, nozzles with a larger spray width, such as 517, 617, or 717, are usually used. However, precision finishing touches are usually made with a smaller nozzle, such as 217 or 317.

Definitely worth checking to see if the paint spray gun you have chosen comes with more than one nozzle. If not, you will just need to get the extra tips you need.

Most major manufacturers offer a wide variety of options anyway, so you don’t have to worry.

Accessories

Among the paint spray guns, there is really a variety of addons. Some models offer you significantly more extras and gadgets than others. We will now try to introduce you to some of the most basic gadgets that can make your work process easier.

Some models may offer you the ability to set different operating modes. This allows you to adapt the density, speed, or method of spraying the paint to your specific needs.

It is definitely worth focusing on models that have the option of connecting to a garden hose. Cleaning these devices can sometimes be terribly annoying and overshadow the enjoyment of the work and the results obtained.

In many cases, painting certain corners can be complicated and painful for your back, for example. In this situation, paint spray gun extensions are the ideal solution to the problem.

In addition, it is almost mandatory to work equipped with the appropriate filters. They are essential for a smooth and elegant finish that you are very likely to strive for.

The filters remove paint residues and prevent clogging of the nozzle, which could otherwise lead to undesirable results.

If you want to get the best possible results for the longest possible period of time, it would be best to take good care of the condition of your paint spray gun.

That is why we recommend that you apply appropriate protective equipment to your device. These are usually liquid additives that can prevent sticking, freezing, corrosion, etc. This is guaranteed to extend the life of your paint spray gun.

Of course, there are a bunch of other devices that will make the painting process as convenient and efficient as possible. If you are interested in them, you will certainly find the necessary information in various forums and the like.

Quality and price

Naturally, we all want to get the best possible results against the efforts we put into a certain activity. However, in order to get them, in the case of painting we will need the highest quality paint spray gun.

It is inevitable that the price of products will increase along with their capabilities and the attention paid to their production.

We are aware that everyone is looking for the best possible offer. Keep in mind, however, that sometimes it is impossible to deprive yourself of the capabilities of a particular paint spray gun. Otherwise, you simply will not achieve the end results you are striving for.

Of course, everyone has a budget. At the same time, however, everyone has certain requirements. When you balance both sides of the coin well enough, you will certainly make your choice easier.

Our advice is, first of all, to think about what exactly you need. Carefully consider what you want to use your future paint spray gun for, and so you will certainly start to filter the various products with ease.

In most cases, do-it-yourselfers hardly need anything too specialized. If you intend to simply arrange a certain area of your home, paint your fence, or something similar, probably even the simplest paint spray gun will do a good job.

However, professionals cannot afford to make such compromises. That is why they usually focus on the highest quality products, regardless of price.

If you are aware enough and coordinate your budget and needs properly, you will certainly make the best possible choice. This way you will get the perfect paint spray gun with the perfect price-quality ratio.

How to use your paint spray gun?

Well, you already know everything you need to about paint spray guns. Now we are sure that you will choose the right device.

However, buying is not everything. Working with paint generally hides its risks, and paint spray guns (like everything else) have their own characteristics. It is important to know them well in order to achieve the desired results efficiently and safely.

In this section, we have prepared some basic tips and guidelines related to the use of such a device. Follow them when you work, and we guarantee that you will be satisfied.

Read the user manual

Before you start working at all, it is mandatory to read in detail the instructions for use of the purchased product.

You will find all the necessary information about the features of the particular paint spray gun. In addition, you will learn not only how to use the device efficiently and safely, but also how to proceed in various situations that may arise in the process of work.

The user manual does not come with the product by accident. Pay due attention to it and it will pay off later.

Always wear protective equipment

Precautions are a must when working with a paint spray gun. Special gloves, goggles, and a mask are required.

The spray paint on some devices is extremely powerful and has a chance to penetrate your skin. This is known as an “injection injury”. The purpose of protective gloves is to protect your hands from something like this.

If the paint penetrates your skin, the toxins it contains will enter your body. In such a situation, be sure to seek medical help immediately!

Goggles will protect your eyes not only from the paint that comes out of your device. They also serve to prevent potential ricochet of paint from the painted object.

The mouth mask is simply a must when working with any paint. It protects your airways as well as your lungs from paint penetration.

Secure the painting process

To make the painting process as safe as possible, there are a few basic steps you can take.

If you use a paint spray gun indoors, always make sure the room is well ventilated. Open all windows, doors, etc. We even recommend using fans if you need to help with ventilation. This will avoid the retention of toxic paint residues in the room.

Also, cover everything around your work area with towels. Make sure you don’t forget the plants and the windows around you too.

When working outdoors, avoid using your paint spray gun in windy weather.

Last but not least – do not rush! Take enough time to paint and work carefully. Most accidents happen because of excessive haste.
