Danner footwear is well known for their work boots and casual outdoor shoes, but they also produce quality hiking footwear such as the Trail 2650 model – designed specifically to tackle the 2,650 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail as a lightweight hiking shoe that thru-hikers might prefer over trail running shoes.
The 2650 GTX shoe is easy to slip on thanks to a heel tab and minimal lacing system, providing snug without tight fitting that doesn’t require breaking in over several days.
I found them comfortable enough on most terrain; though its narrow toebox could become loose during use on rough trails. Furthermore, its outsole platform projects slightly outward from each side which may create some instability when walking or hiking on rough trails.
Though their toe boxes don’t provide as much protection as hiking boots, the overall fit was great and I experienced no ankle rolls or discomfort on the trails. These shoes also work perfectly with dust gaiters–essential gear for hikers who frequent sandy and sagebrush-covered paths.
These shoes feature excellent traction on a range of surfaces and boast an outsole platform that extends slightly on either side, which provides additional lateral stability when scrambling up steep descents.
Their multi-directional lugs offer confidence-inducing grip in wet or dry conditions for enhanced confidence during scrambling up steep descents.
These shoes may be more costly, but they offer exceptional traction on rugged terrain for day hiking. I have worn similar pairs from Salomon’s X Ultra 4 GTX and Kamik Men’s Spark Lite GTX on long backpacking trips; both boast similar features but weigh slightly less.

Climbing lugs at the front provide excellent uphill grip, but on their heel side switch direction to become braking lugs that dig into muddy and slippery slopes for superior braking power on steep descents – I have personally tested these out even on wet rock surfaces without disappointment!
Additionally, its ADV-C chassis adds more support along the outer edges of the shoe which gives more stability compared to its predecessor, the X Ultra 3, which was great on technical terrain but didn’t offer complete hiking boot stability.
As a final note, please be aware that this shoe was designed with narrow feet in mind, so wide feet may find it uncomfortable or tight.
Luckily, however, it also comes in a Wide version which is rare among outdoor footwear offerings and heavier than its average hiking counterpart (1 lb 12 oz for size 10 US/6.5 UK).
