Car Power Inverters Buying Guide
Inverters offer their users a wide variety of applications and that is why they are so popular and often needed. On the market today you can find a variety of models, each of which has its own specific characteristics and features.
What are inverters?
Regardless of their features, inverters are devices that convert direct current into alternating current.
This ability certainly implies different uses. However, inverters are most commonly used to convert 12 V DC to 110 V AC.
The battery voltage of your car is just 12 volts DC. The alternating voltage of 110 V is exactly similar to the voltage that ordinary home outlets output.
With such a voltage you have the opportunity to power a variety of devices just as you would in your home.
However, this would only be possible thanks to the right inverter.
Of course, in almost all cars you can use a USB adapter for the lighter, with which you can charge your phone or turn on a navigation device, for example. For everything bigger, however, you will need to use an inverter.
And you can guess that if you have to spend one or more evenings alone with your vehicle, the presence of such a device becomes mandatory.
Your car’s battery provides it with electricity that powers its internal system. This current remains in one electrical circuit and moves in one direction. This is where the name “direct current” comes from.
However, to power most electrical devices, you need more energy than the direct current can provide. That is why it is necessary to convert it into an alternating current with the help of a specialized device such as the inverter.
Most electrical devices are designed for home use where you have high voltage AC available.
The inverters manage to increase the DC voltage and convert it to AC. Thus, they allow you to use electricity to power your various devices.
In general, whenever you need to convert direct current to alternating current, you just can’t do it without an inverter.
What types of inverters are there?
And you can see inverters are quite specialized devices, whose only function is related to the conversion of electric current. However, you will be surprised by how many different features different types of inverters can have.
Each type is more suitable for use in a particular situation than the others. It is important to know the varieties of these devices because only then you will be able to choose exactly what you need.
Of course, inverters can be grouped differently depending on their specifics. Most often, however, this grouping is based on the output characteristics of the devices.
Thus, they are divided into three main types: square wave, sine wave, or modified sine wave.
Square wave inverters
What is special about this type of inverter is that the shape of the output voltage wave is a square wave.
This type of inverter is generally the least common. This is because almost all electrical appliances are designed to be powered by a sine wave.
If you try to supply a square wave to a device that is powered by a sine wave, you run the risk of seriously damaging it.
That is why the price of such inverters is usually extremely low. Unfortunately, their applications are also not very diverse. Such models can be used only with really simple tools that work with a universal motor.
Although in some cases we need something like this, square wave inverters are now relatively rare.
Sine wave inverters
Sine waves are the ones you usually get from your local power provider. Most electric generators also supply such waves.
This is because the current is generated by rotating AC machines, and sine waves are the natural product of such rotating AC machines.
The biggest advantage of sine wave inverters is that almost all electrical equipment you will find on the market is designed to work with sine waves. If you get such an inverter, of course, you guarantee that your electrical appliances will work to their full specifications.
Some devices can even produce their full power only if they are powered by a sine wave. Such are, for example, some motors, microwave ovens, and others.
Other devices such as ovens, light dimmers, and chargers need a sine wave to work at all.
These inverters are generally much easier to find and are widely used in residential and commercial environments. Unfortunately, the price of sine wave inverters is usually 2-3 times higher than that of their competitors with square waves.
Inverters with modified sine wave
The design of this type of inverter is definitely more complex than that of square wave inverters. At the same time, however, it is simpler than sine wave inverters.
The output of such inverters is neither a pure square wave nor a pure sine wave. Rather, it is a special combination of the two.
Modified sine wave inverters can work with almost any device. However, its performance will probably never be able to reach its full potential under such conditions.
Thus, the motors of various refrigerators, pumps, fans, etc. for example, will use more power than the inverter, but will not be as efficient. In most cases, it is about using around 20% more energy.
This is because a certain percentage of the modified sine wave has a frequency higher than 60 Hz and most motors cannot use it. For example, some fluorescent lamps may not be so bright or flicker from time to time.
The operating time of most electrical appliances is obtained directly from the main supply. In principle, 60 Hz (cycles per second) are taken and divided by 1 per second or whatever else is needed.
In addition, precisely because the modified sine wave has a higher frequency than the pure sine wave, many clocks or timers may run faster or not work at all. They also have some parts of the wave that are not 60 Hz and this can make them speed up.
Ovens, light dimmers and the like may not work at all. In many cases, appliances, where the temperature is electronically regulated, will also not work.
Usually, devices that have the ability to operate at different speeds will remain with only two speeds – on and off.
What to consider when buying an inverter?
Well, you can see for yourself that different types of inverters have their own characteristics and applications. In all circumstances, the type of your inverter must be compatible with the electrical appliances you want to power.
However, this is not all you need to pay attention to if you want to get the best possible product on the market. The inverters have a bunch of other features and peculiarities that we have yet to introduce to you.
Size and capacity
The size and capacity of inverters are closely related. Generally speaking, the larger a device, the more power it can provide.
Inverters are generally available in different models. However, the most common models are 500W, 750W, and 1000W. This is a kind of peak efficiency of different inverters.
In many cases, it is recommended to target 1000-watt inverters. They are the ideal environment between large capacity and affordable choice.
They are neither too low power as 500 watts, nor unnecessarily bulky like 3000 watts. However, if you need a little extra power, we recommend switching to 1500-watt models.
In any case, you should be aware that the size of the inverter you need depends primarily on the watts or amps of what you want to power. You can find out about the energy consumption according to the description or instructions of the specific appliance or tool.
However meticulously savvy you may be, it’s always a good idea to get a more powerful one. This will make sure that your new acquisition will eventually do the job you took it for. Look for inverters with at least 20% more capacity than you need.
In addition, it is important to determine both the continuous and the initial (or peak) load of the device you want to power. It is important to know that all electrical devices need one amount of energy to start working, and another for long-term operation.
Choose carefully and you will surely be satisfied with the choice made.
Batteries
Inverters do not normally have a built-in battery, but inverter batteries can be purchased separately. They are useful in the event of a power outage or similar emergency. In most cases, they will allow you to power your device for enough extra time.
However, the performance of your inverter will depend on the characteristics of the battery you have supplied. Lead and, in some cases, lead-acid batteries can usually be used to power various inverters.
However, it is a good idea to choose your batteries according to their capacity. It is usually measured in ampere-hours (Ah). Ampere-hours show the current that the battery can provide for a certain period of time.
If the capacity of a battery is 100 Ah, it could provide a current of 100 A for 1 hour, a current of 1 A for 100 hours or a current of 2 A for 50 hours, and so on.
Inverter batteries usually have a capacity of 100 Ah, 150 Ah, or 180 Ah.
There are different types of ordinary inverter batteries, but their features are not so significant. That is why we will not burden you unnecessarily with information about them.
Technical specifications
Of course, it is extremely important to pay attention to all the technical specifications of the inverters you are considering. They will give you the necessary information about their compatibility with various appliances.
You are already aware of the capacity of these devices, as well as the features of the different waves they work with.
For example, the maximum output power of alternating current will give you information about the maximum power that your inverter can deliver on a constant basis at a certain output voltage. This value is usually expressed in watts or kilowatts.
Peak output power, on the other hand, refers to the maximum output power that an inverter can provide in a short time. Refrigerators, air conditioners, and pump motors, for example, need more energy to get started than to operate.
The AC output voltage will show you which main network voltages a certain inverter can be connected to. For inverters intended for domestic use, the output voltage is usually in the range of 120 V and 240 V. However, the standard varies from country to country.
Of course, you must also comply with the maximum input and output current that your inverter can use. At the same time, however, it is important to pay attention to the protection specifications of your future inverter.
Most external inverters, for example, have a NEMA rating. It shows the level of protection against water penetration into a device. In the same way, it is important to check the levels of other protections (most often from weather) of the targeted inverters.
Also, keep in mind that it is important that your inverter is grounded. In most cases, these devices come with a built-in grounding system. However, we recommend that you check for one anyway.
Note that the ones listed so far are only part of the technical specifications of the inverters.
Addons
Depending on the addons that your future inverter is equipped with, you can significantly diversify its applications.
In various types of solar installations, for example, inverters are generally mandatory. They convert solar energy into electricity that you can use yourself.
In addition, if you have a more secluded hut or villa, you can hardly do without an inverter. With its help, you could provide a source of usable electricity for domestic (and not only) use.
Also, keep in mind that many modern inverters come with USB ports. They are especially useful for charging on the go and save you the hassle of going around adapters and large plugs. We definitely recommend you to look for a model that has such an extra.
However, the most modern devices are usually designed with special digital screens. From them, you can get information about power consumption and battery voltage. It is definitely worth being informed about all this, so such a model is always a good idea.
There are even special solar inverters that work extremely quietly. They are just great if you spend most of your time outdoors and would never be a nuisance to your vacation.
Inverters also have heaps of gadgets and applications. However, the ones we introduced you to are some of the most curious and definitely worth your attention.
Quality, price, and safety
Although safe, inverters remain devices through which a huge amount of electricity often passes. Improper use, improper selection, or poor quality of a product can lead to really risky situations.
That is why we recommend that you focus on guaranteed well-groomed and safe models. In many cases, unfortunately, this means spending more money on your new acquisition.
Keep in mind, however, that the high price often means better workmanship, more attention, and time that have been involved in the manufacture of a particular product. This is the reason why more expensive models are worth it in most cases.
In addition, you should be aware that poor-quality goods, although initially cheaper, may end up being more expensive. Repairing and replacing a product will gradually turn a good offer into a bad deal.
However, everyone’s goals are different. That’s why if you want to save some money, it’s a good idea to think about what you care about and what you can get rid of.
You already know all the key features of inverters, so you know exactly what you need. Choose wisely and you will surely make the best possible choice.
And don’t forget – safety always comes first.
